Beatster Partymagazine: Wally, you started very young, at age 13 you had your own radioshow. How old were you when you first knew you wanted to become a deejay?
Wally Lopez: Well…I was 18 when I decided to stop studying at the school and start deejaying full-time.
Beatster Partymagazine: How did you get your own radioshow at that young age?
Wally Lopez: First… it was because I was 13 some friends and me used to go to a small place for very young kinds…I loved to see the deejay @ work and he allso had this radio show. I got some records from my family and went there to have a slot… and I got it….
but the radio station had like 5 listeners. Lol
Beatster Partymagazine: Where & when was your first public appearance as a deejay?
Wally Lopez: In that time…I needed like 4 or 5 years to become a real dj hahaha….It was with my cousin in a club in madrid…. But for me I wasn’t a deejay in that time..just a kid who loved music….
Beatster Partymagazine: How did it feel, were you nervous, excited & how did that very first set turn out?
Wally Lopez: The club was completely emptied…but I was excited of course… I didn’t really know how to mix or play, just stop one record fade out play the other and fade in. It wasn’t a real set… just a kid playing music as if I knew how to do it.:-)
Beatster Partymagazine: Who is/was your great example? Is there a specific person who has an influence on your style? And what do you think is so great about this person?
Wally Lopez: There were a few…. I loved how eric morillo used to play and be with his fans and make his bussiness years ago….I loved how danny tenaglia produced….And I always loved bands like New Order or Depeche Mode…
Beatster Partymagazine: You travel around the globe, What is your favorite place you’ve been so far, and why?
Wally Lopez: I have a few… ibiza is amazing…it is the center of the world of the electronic music scene. Madrid is my home… I love to live here….
Beatster Partymagazine: How many times did you visit Belgium, what do you think of our small country & what do you think of the party scene here?
Wally Lopez: I played here a few times…and honestly can say..that there are not too many places in the world where you can really feel as if u are at home… to feel you are part of the family and one of these places is VERSUZ:.. I love it… I played in belgium a few times..and always had soo much fun…and I love Dave Lambert as a dj and friend…. Yeah, I really love belgium!
Beatster Partymagazine: Where was your worst gig and why?
Wally Lopez: My first 10 years were the worst LOL Cant tell you the worst… but I had a lot…the most when I was young and tried to make cool things in spain, where there was no scene!
Beatster Partymagazine: Are there places you never want to go to again? If so, where & why?
Wally Lopez: There are not.. I don’t like to say NEVER…. I had some problems in some countries with agents, or promoters…but a whole country cant be guilty for a person.
Beatster Partymagazine: In DJ mag’s top 100 you climbed from position 95 in 2007 to position 62 in 2009. That’s a huge climb of 23 positions in 2 years. Does it make a big change in your carreer?
Wally Lopez: Well… I’m not sure if it does but it is true that in those 2 years i did a step up. So..at least in my case it represents the work we are doing lately…. And we are working even harder to climb up more!
Beatster Partymagazine: You did some festivals last year, what do you prefer, a club or a festival/concert? I can imagine it’s pretty scary to perform for such a big crowd, but the thrill must be huge, wright?
Wally Lopez: Hahaha…I’m quite strange with my nervs…not really feeling nervous in front of 2 or 20.000 people when I’m up on a stage. I always see them and try to rock them… what I feel every gig is the responsability to do my job as best as I can.
Beatster Partymagazine: What did you think of Tomorrowland 2009?
Wally Lopez: It Was huuuge!!!!! Hopefully I will be there again in 2010…. It Was my first festival in belgium so I was quite excited.
Beatster Partymagazine: On wich festivals can we expect to see you in 2010?
Wally Lopez: No idea yet…. But I really love to play on festivals this summer…Ibiza and worldwide festivals are our goals this year.
Beatster Partymagazine: Can we expect some releases of you in 2010?
Wally Lopez: The other goal we have this year are releases…. I’m making a cd and some original tunes for a big label…and preparing a few new releases in worldwide labels… I’m also releasing some new tracks on the factoria…which is my own label….
Beatster Partymagazine: Wally, thank you very much for this interview!
Wally Lopez: You’re welcome, I enjoyed it
